Riffle Shrimp

Riffle Shrimp (Australatya striolata) are fascinating freshwater filter-feeding shrimp native to Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. Unlike Amano or Cherry Shrimp, they use specialised fan-like appendages to capture tiny particles, microorganisms, and suspended food directly from flowing water.

These peaceful shrimp thrive in well-oxygenated aquariums with moderate water flow, where they can perch on rocks, wood, or plants and extend their delicate fans into the current. Growing up to 8–10 cm in length, Riffle Shrimp are excellent natural filter feeders and make a unique addition to planted aquariums and river-style aquascapes.
